Chapter one of Criticizing Art was the overture to art criticism and critics of various districts of art. The chapter brought a number of insightful briefs about the point of view of the critics, that they’re the kind of people who point out the flaws of an artist’s work for better or for worse. They make an artist stop dead in his or her tacks by making them see their own work in the most unflattering light, guiding them to meet a different harbinger of their artistic inadequacies.
Criticism also delivers a whole new light to an artist’s work: positive feedback encourages an artist to continue the good work, but negative feedback electrifies an artist to expand beyond their comfort zone and to improve whatever personal failures may be in the way. On a personal level, criticism is one way to improve my work, but my preference lies elsewhere. Instead I substitute criticism with studying other works of art that are entirely different from my own – a difference that would remind oneself of how many rooms there are in the house of art.
