As a BFA art student aspiring to make my own niche in the art world, I am ashamed that I am not as well acquainted with the musical and theatrical divisions as I am with the visual division of the art world. After listening to a talented collaboration between soprano Jenni Cook and pianist Arlene Kies at the UNH Faculty series a week ago, I was astonished that I had yet to frequent these inspiring events full of vigor and vivacity from the musicians. The concert was a compilation of poems by Verlaine, Goethe, and more, sung by Cook’s brilliant voice and supported by Kies’ piano duet. A number of the pieces were foreign, and while a good amount were French (and one lone English piece that I wasn’t too fond with), I found myself oddly drawn towards the German compositions. I favored little of the performances, though I did prefer a select number of the variations over the others. Overall, I was reminded how talented our faculty are – no matter if they are musicians or visual artists – and how appreciated I am to be mentored by them.
Also, I wish that boy sitting next to Arlene wore semi-formal clothes… his casual languor was incredibly distracting!
