“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!” –Kanye West
It goes without saying that Kanye West is either loved or hated: hardly anyone dabbles in the in-between. Regardless of self-promotion and his habit to be in the center of a controversial event (such as him interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMA’s), West has phenomenal raw talent as a musician, often praised for his artistic compositions and his collaborations with other – perhaps equally as talented – musicians of his time. Sasha Frere-Jones of the New Yorker discusses many aspects of West, such as his twitter persona, his political persona, and of course, his musician persona. She also described West having artistic Tourette’s, and in a society in which young pop stars “are ready for prime-time interviews before they’ve hit puberty”, West’s unruly behavior is something like a gift. Throughout the years, Kanye West had gradually evolved not only his music, but has also influenced the music industry outside hip hop/rap.
